WHEN PAIN HITS AT THE WORST TIME

Dental Pain Hits Hard, and It Always Picks the Worst Moment

Maybe it started as a dull ache last night and you tried to sleep through it. Maybe it’s a cracked tooth from biting down wrong. Maybe a knocked-out tooth in the parking lot. Maybe swelling that’s getting worse by the hour and you can’t tell if it’s serious.

You’re already doing the math: Is this an ER visit? Should I drive to one of those urgent-care chains? Can I just take Advil and ride it out? The pain is intractable, but “toothache” sounds so minor that part of you doesn’t want to be dramatic about it.

Here’s the truth most people don’t realize: a hospital ER can give you antibiotics and pain meds, but they can’t actually fix the tooth. Stand-alone urgent care clinics rarely have a dentist on staff. What you actually need is a dental practice that holds time open for emergencies — and treats them today, not next week.

WHAT WE DO

Same-Day Dental Emergency Care, Not a Triage Phone Call

At Aster Smiles, we hold time open every day for dental emergency care. When you call (832) 476-7676 during business hours, you’re not getting passed to a call center or told to come back next Tuesday — you’re getting a real conversation with our team about how soon we can see you and what to do until then.

Most emergency patients are seen the same day. Many within hours. We diagnose with on-site digital imaging, stop your pain, stabilize the tooth, and walk you through the full plan in plain language — including what insurance covers and what it won’t.

Dr. Thanh Huynh, DMD, FAGD, brings advanced training in oral surgery, extractions, and IV sedation directly to your emergency visit. That means complex problems — broken roots, severe infections, traumatic tooth loss — are typically handled in-house, without a referral to a separate oral surgeon across town.

KNOW WHAT YOU’RE DEALING WITH

What Counts as a Dental Emergency, Exactly?

If you’re not sure whether your situation needs dental emergency care, you’re not alone — most patients delay because they don’t want to overreact. The general rule: if pain, swelling, bleeding, or trauma is interfering with your day, it’s worth a phone call. Here’s what we treat as same-day emergencies:

Severe Toothache

Throbbing pain that won't quit, gets worse with pressure or temperature, or is keeping you up at night. This often signals a deep cavity, cracked tooth, or infection.

Cracked or Broken Tooth

A chip, fracture, or visibly broken tooth — even without pain. Cracks expose the inner tooth and can worsen quickly. Save any pieces if you can.

Knocked-Out Tooth

Time-critical. The best chance to save the tooth is within 60 minutes. Keep it moist (milk or saliva), don't touch the root, and call us immediately.

Abscess or Infection

Swelling, warmth, pus, fever, or a bad taste in the mouth. Infections can spread fast — don't wait this one out at home.

Lost Filling or Crown

The exposed tooth is now vulnerable to damage and decay. We can usually re-cement or replace it the same day, often without an injection.

Soft-Tissue Injury or Bleeding

Cuts to the lips, gums, tongue, or cheeks — especially bleeding that doesn't stop after 15 minutes of gentle pressure. Call us right away.

⚠️ Go to the ER, not us, if you have:

Severe facial swelling that’s affecting your breathing or vision · A high fever with dental pain · Uncontrolled bleeding after a serious head/face injury · A jaw fracture or suspected concussion. Hospital ERs handle these. Once you’re stable, we can take over the dental side.

WHAT TO EXPECT

What Happens Before, During, and After Your Dental Emergency Care Visit

STEP 1 · BEFORE

Call & First-Aid Triage

Call (832) 476-7676. We’ll ask quick questions to gauge urgency and offer the soonest available slot — usually the same day during business hours.

If it’s after hours, leave a voicemail and we’ll call back as soon as possible. We’ll also walk you through immediate first-aid steps over the phone — what to do with a knocked-out tooth, how to manage swelling, when ibuprofen is safe.

STEP 2 · DURING

Diagnose, Stop the Pain, Stabilize

You’ll be seen by Dr. Huynh, who’ll do a focused exam, take a digital X-ray on-site, and explain what’s actually going on in plain language — not jargon.

The first goal is always pain relief and stabilization. Definitive treatment (extraction, root canal, crown, repair) happens that same visit when possible — or is scheduled within a few days with clear next steps.

STEP 3 · AFTER

Clear Plan & Long-Term Protection

You leave with written aftercare instructions, any prescribed medications, and a written estimate for any follow-up work — including what insurance covers.

We follow up by phone within 24–48 hours to check on you. The emergency is the entry point; the goal is making sure this doesn’t happen the same way again.

SAFETY · CREDENTIALS · PROTOCOLS

Why Trust Aster Smiles for Dental Emergency Care

Emergency situations are when credentials matter most. You don’t want a referral chase, you don’t want “come back next week,” and you don’t want a dentist guessing at a complex extraction. Here’s what backs up our same-day care:

What to Do RIGHT NOW (Before You Get Here)

Severe Pain

Take ibuprofen as directed (if safe for you). Apply a cold compress to the outside of your face for 15 minutes on, 15 off. Avoid hot drinks and chewing on that side.

Knocked-Out Tooth

Pick the tooth up by the crown (top), not the root. Rinse gently if dirty. Place it in a cup of milk or hold it inside your cheek. Get to us within 60 minutes if possible.

Bleeding That Won’t Stop

Bite down on a clean gauze pad or moistened tea bag with firm pressure for 15 minutes. If bleeding continues after that — call us or head to an ER.

Lost Filling or Crown

Save the piece if possible. Avoid chewing on that side. Drugstore temporary cement can hold a crown for 24–48 hours until you’re seen.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Dental Emergency Care FAQs

We hold reserved emergency slots every business day. Most patients calling during business hours are seen the same day — often within a few hours. Saturday hours (9 AM – 4 PM) are also included. Call (832) 476-7676 as your first move and our team will tell you the soonest available slot before you even hang up.

Leave a voicemail at (832) 476-7676 and we’ll call you back as soon as possible to schedule the soonest available appointment. For genuine medical emergencies — uncontrolled bleeding after a head injury, severe swelling affecting breathing, suspected jaw fracture — go to a hospital emergency room first. Once you’re stabilized, we can pick up the dental side.

The ER is the right call for severe facial swelling that’s affecting breathing or vision, uncontrolled bleeding after a major head/face injury, suspected jaw fracture, or dental pain combined with high fever and a feeling of being seriously unwell. The ER can manage pain, give you antibiotics, and rule out serious complications — but they typically can’t extract teeth, do root canals, or place crowns. For everything else (toothaches, broken teeth, knocked-out teeth, abscesses, lost crowns), a dentist who offers same-day emergency care is faster, less expensive, and far more effective.

Time matters. Pick up the tooth by the crown (the white top part), not the root. Rinse it gently with milk or saline if it’s dirty — don’t scrub. Try to place it back in the socket if you can, or store it in a cup of milk or held inside your cheek to keep it moist. Then call us immediately at (832) 476-7676. The best chance of saving the tooth is within 30 to 60 minutes. After about an hour, the chances drop significantly.

Yes. If you’re highly anxious, in significant trauma, or facing a complex procedure (like a surgical extraction), Dr. Huynh can provide IV sedation during your emergency visit. We do require a brief pre-sedation medical review, and you’ll need a responsible adult to drive you home — but no separate visit or specialist referral is needed.

It depends entirely on what’s wrong. A simple lost-crown re-cement is very different from a root canal or surgical extraction. We accept most major dental insurance and verify your benefits up front. Without insurance, our Wellness Plan ($24/mo adult, $21/mo child) gives you 20% off most treatments and 50% off IV sedation. Financing through CareCredit and Sunbit is available, including 0% APR for qualified applicants. Every patient gets a clear, written estimate before treatment begins.

You’re far from the only one — and we don’t lecture. The emergency comes first; everything else is a conversation we have once you’re out of pain and on your terms. We see plenty of patients in our chair for the first time after years away, and Dr. Huynh’s approach is zero-judgment, plain language, and your pace.
