WHY YOU’VE BEEN PUTTING IT OFF

It's Been Longer Than You Want to Admit. We Get It — and We Don't Care.

Eight months turned into a year. The year turned into three. Now you’re rounding up when people ask. The longer the gap got, the harder it became to walk into a new office and have someone judge you for it — so you keep waiting for the “right time” that never comes.

Here’s what we want you to know up front: nobody on our team is keeping score. Not Dr. Huynh, not the hygienists, not the front desk. We’ve seen patients in our chair for the first time after 5, 10, 15+ years away. The numbers don’t surprise us. The shame doesn’t help anyone. The only thing that matters is what we find today and what we do about it together — at your pace, with your input, and with prices you actually agree to before any work begins.

If you’re reading this and feeling that familiar mix of “I should” and “but what will they say,” the answer is: nothing you haven’t already thought yourself. We’re going to look, tell you the truth, and help you decide what’s next. That’s it.

WHAT WE DO

Dental Checkups Built Around How You Actually Want to Be Treated

A dental checkup at Aster Smiles is thorough but not rushed, professional but not impersonal. Dr. Huynh, DMD, FAGD, examines your teeth, gums, bite, and surrounding tissue. The hygienist removes plaque and tartar that brushing can’t reach. We take low-radiation digital X-rays only when clinically warranted, not as a default add-on.

What you won’t get here: a list of “recommended” cosmetic upgrades you didn’t ask about, a guilt trip about how often you floss, or a sales pitch for a treatment plan you’re handed at checkout. What you will get: a plain-language summary of what we found, written pricing for anything that needs attention, and a candid answer to the question “what would you do if this were your mouth?”

If something needs treatment, we’ll explain why. If it can wait, we’ll tell you that too. The goal isn’t to fill our schedule — it’s to keep you in our chair every six months for years.

WHAT’S ACTUALLY IN ONE

What's Actually Included in Dental Checkups at Aster Smiles

A complete checkup visit usually runs 45–75 minutes — sometimes a little longer if it’s been a while since your last cleaning. Dental checkups have four parts that build on each other: a comprehensive exam, digital X-rays (when needed), a professional cleaning, and a clear review of findings.

Comprehensive Exam

Dr. Huynh checks every tooth, gum line, bite, jaw movement, and surrounding tissue. Includes screening for cavities, gum disease, oral cancer, and grinding wear.

Digital X-Rays

Low-radiation imaging — typically about 90% less radiation than traditional film X-rays. Reveals decay between teeth, bone loss, and impacted teeth invisible to the eye.

Professional Cleaning

Hygienist removes plaque and hardened tartar that brushing physically can't reach. Polishes and flosses every tooth surface — leaves teeth smooth and noticeably cleaner.

WHAT WE CATCH EARLY

What Routine Dental Checkups Are Designed to Catch

Most dental problems don’t hurt until they’re advanced. The whole point of a checkup is to find issues while they’re still small, cheap to fix, and not waking you up at night.

Cavities & Early Decay

Caught early, a cavity is a 20-minute filling. Caught late, it's a root canal and a crown — five to ten times the cost and the time.

Early Gum Disease

Bleeding when you brush, redness, or mild swelling. At this stage (gingivitis), it's reversible. The next stage isn't — it permanently damages the bone holding your teeth in.

Oral Cancer Screening

Visual and tactile screening of the lips, tongue, throat, and soft tissue for early signs. Survival rates are dramatically higher when caught at a checkup vs. later.

Worn or Cracked Teeth

Hairline fractures, grinding wear, or chips — often invisible until they cause pain. A small protective treatment now beats a crown or extraction later.

Failing Old Dental Work

Old fillings or crowns that are cracking, leaking, or coming loose. Replaced early, it's straightforward. Replaced after pain hits, it's an emergency visit.

Bite & Alignment Changes

Teeth shift over time — sometimes from grinding, sometimes from gum recession, sometimes from a single missing molar. Caught at a checkup, it's manageable.

WHAT TO EXPECT

What Happens Before, During, and After Your Checkup

STEP 1 · BEFORE

Booking & Paperwork

Book online or by phone. We send forms to fill out at home so check-in takes minutes, not the half-hour clipboard ritual. Insurance is verified before you arrive — you’ll know what’s covered before sitting in the chair.

If it’s been years and you’re nervous, just say so when you book. We’ll add extra time and put you with a hygienist used to working with anxious patients.

STEP 2 · DURING

The Visit

Comprehensive exam by Dr. Huynh. Digital X-rays if needed. Then a thorough cleaning by your hygienist — plaque, tartar, polishing, flossing. Anywhere from 45–75 minutes depending on what we find.

If anything is sensitive, you can stop us with a hand signal at any point. We’ll adjust pace, technique, or take a break — your call.

STEP 3 · AFTER

Findings & Plan

Dr. Huynh walks you through findings in plain language — including digital photos and X-ray images so you can see what we see. If anything needs treatment, you get written pricing and zero pressure to decide today.

Personalized at-home recommendations and your next checkup date booked before you walk out.

SAFETY · CREDENTIALS · STANDARDS

Why Trust Aster Smiles for Routine Dental Checkups

Routine dental checkups should be a baseline of care — but the dentist providing them still matters. Here’s the credential and protocol stack behind every checkup at Aster Smiles:

Who Should Come In More Often Than Every 6 Months?

Every 3–4 months if you have:

Active or treated gum disease · A history of frequent cavities · Diabetes or other conditions affecting gum health · Heavy plaque/tartar build-up · A weakened immune system · Pregnancy

Standard 6-month rhythm if you have:

Healthy gums and teeth · Few or no cavities historically · Good at-home brushing and flossing routine · No major medical conditions affecting oral health

Dr. Huynh will recommend the right rhythm for you — based on what we actually see, not a one-size-fits-all default.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Dental Checkups FAQs

For most adults, every six months is the right rhythm. If you have active or treated gum disease, frequent cavities, diabetes, or you’re pregnant, Dr. Huynh may recommend every 3–4 months instead. The recommendation comes from what we actually see in your mouth, not a one-size-fits-all default.

You’re welcome here — no judgment, no lecture, no “you should have come in sooner.” We see plenty of patients in our chair for the first time after 5, 10, 15+ years away. We’ll start fresh: assess where things stand, walk you through findings in plain language, and build a plan to get your oral health back on track at a pace that works for you. The first visit might run a little longer than a standard checkup so we have time to do it right.

No. Checkups and cleanings are gentle. If you have sensitive teeth, dental anxiety, or it’s been a while since your last visit, let us know when you book. We’ll add extra time, pair you with a hygienist used to working with anxious patients, and offer comfort amenities like weighted blankets, neck pillows, and noise-canceling earplugs. You can stop us at any point with a hand signal — we’ll adjust pace, technique, or take a break.

Not at every visit — but they’re essential for finding problems that aren’t visible during a visual exam, like decay between teeth, bone loss from gum disease, infections at the root, or impacted teeth. We use low-radiation digital X-rays (about 90% less radiation than traditional film) and only take them when clinically warranted. For most healthy adults, that’s once every 12–24 months. Sometimes more often if there’s an active concern, sometimes less.

Most major dental insurance covers two preventive checkups per year at 100% — meaning $0 out of pocket for exam, X-rays, and cleaning. We verify your benefits before your appointment so there are no surprises. Without insurance, our Wellness Plan ($24/mo adult, $21/mo child) includes all checkups and X-rays at no additional cost, plus a cleaning at $32 and 25% off any other treatments. If you prefer pay-as-you-go, standard pricing is quoted up front.

We’ll show you exactly what we found — including digital photos and X-ray images so you can see what we see — explain why it matters, and give you written pricing for any recommended treatment. There’s never any pressure to decide on the spot. You can take the estimate home, get a second opinion, check with your insurance, or just sit on it for a week. The goal is informed decisions, not impulse ones.
