What “maintenance” means after SRP
A regular six-month cleaning is not the same visit as periodontal maintenance. After SRP, pockets and root surfaces still need closer monitoring. Maintenance visits check bleeding, pocket depths, and plaque control on a tighter interval — often every three to four months at first — so early buildup does not undo the deep cleaning.

What happens at a maintenance visit
We re-probe the areas that were scaled, remove new deposits above and below the gumline where needed, and review home care that actually fits your chart. Local anesthetic is used only when a site needs deeper work again. You stay awake. Nitrous or IV sedation can be used for longer visits when several areas need attention the same day — sedation by mouth is not offered here.
How often, and for how long
Interval depends on bleeding scores and pocket stability, not a fixed calendar slogan. Many patients start at three-month recalls, then stretch toward four or six months when the tissue stays quiet. Skipping maintenance after SRP is the usual reason pockets deepen again.
